I have been an avid hiker and backpacker for over sixty years. I have hiked mainly in the southeast, but have made a number of hiking and backpacking trips to New England, the Wind River Range and Grand Tetons in Wyoming, the Rockies in southern Colorado, the Cascades in Washington state, the High Sierra in California and Glacer National Park in Montana. I have also hiked in the Swiss Alps and the New Zealand Alps. Probably my favorate place to backpack is in the Wind River Range in Wyoming. It incompasses a broad expanse of wilderness with rugged high peaks and pristine lakes. While the area has a network of good trails,it still has a feeling of remoteness. When we were first married my wife and I spent some time hiking in the Grand Tetons which included climbing the Grand Teton. As we were decending, we were caught in a lighting storm which added a high element of excitement to the climb. Fortunately none of us were struck by the lighting. I have also backpacked extensively in The Great Smokies National Park in North Carolina and Tennessee, year around in all kinds of weather. The Smokies, while not as high as some of the western mountains, are a wonderful place to hike. They have abundant snowfall in the winter and have a wide variety of trees and flowers. The park has an extensive trail system.IIR Filters
